About

Leaving Art School with a BA Hons in Fine Art, specialising in Sculpture, Drawing and Printmaking, Ruth worked as a freelance Sculptor on Private commissions and in the Museums and the Heritage Sector.

Ruth was fortunate to study at a time when students were taught traditional and transferrable Sculpting skills which enabled her to work in a wide range of industries including Hand Made Films, Spitting Image and productions for Theatre, Opera and Museums.

Whilst working in industries perceived to be elite, lucrative or glamorous, the disparity in accessibility to these jobs became very apparent . This realisation kick started a lifelong interest and drive to work towards making the Arts more accessible to all.

More study and work opportunities  led Ruth to work in Education with a specific interest in using the Arts to support neurodiverse young people access the curriculum and achieve their potential.

Working in SEND offered invaluable opportunities for Ruth to work and learn alongside outside agencies including Education Psychologists, Speech & Language and Occupational Therapists in Mainstream and Special Secondary Schools.  Working in SEND settings confirmed the importance of the Arts in engaging and offering opportunities to young people to navigate and understand the world in a calm, creative environment and offer a safe space to be themselves.

Whilst the education environment is important, an opportunity arose to work on the Watts Gallery Trust Art for All Programme https://www.wattsgallery.org.uk/blog/art-for-all-by-all-our-time as the Youth Support and Outreach Officer. This enabled Ruth to combine her teaching and SEND skills to coordinate and deliver workshops to young people in mainstream and out of education who benefit from alternative support including the criminal justice system.

Ruth works as a freelance artist/educator, she lives on the Surrey /West Sussex Border.

When not working Ruth cycles in the South Downs, sketch book always to hand.

Ruth has passion to share the love of creativity and teaches adult drawing and printmaking classes in her home studio .

Please see Workshops for further details of materials, techniques and classes Ruth is comfortable teach.

Ruth is continually inspired by the people she meets and works with which informs her on going art practice.
